"Spades" is similar to "Contract Bridge".
Spades is a descendant of the Whist family of trick-taking card-games. The objective is to take at least the number of tricks (also known as "books") that were bid before play of the hand began. Its major difference to other Whist variants is that instead of trump being decided by the highest bidder or at random, the Spade suit is always trumps.
The cards are dealt face-down in clockwise order. Each player, starting with the left of the dealer, bids the number of tricks they expect to take. After bidding, players in clockwise order play a card of their choice; they must follow suit, if they can, otherwise they may play any card. The trick is won by the player who played the highest card of the led suit – or if trumps were played, the highest trump card wins.
Once the final trick is played, the hand is then scored. Each correctly won bid earns 10 points and additional tricks earn 1 point each. After 10 rounds, the player with the most points is declared the winner.
